"When are you interviewing the band?" a text reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There's just a single issue: The sender also desires to be the Haims' newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. Several high-profile supporters have also petitioned for the honor.

It's clear a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy nominees.

Similar to the best groups, they're a close unit. Their videos frequently depict them marching in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That's the biggest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to form a group."

Grammy Nod

The group are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The project came out of a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The lyrics track departures and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them working out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to make an effort in shutting out the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed resilience required a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The band's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating horror stories.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their place in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

However the band will forever be their number one priority.

"We have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
